Woven Ceramics: Intricately hand-made ceramics
The Woven Ceramics studio takes the concept of 'hand-made' to the extreme. Each piece is shaped without the use of slip cast moulds. This gives the work a unique and unusually individual flair. Using only high quality porcelain, all pieces are delicate and thinly created, but fired to high temperatures to create exceptional durability and strength, and that luxurious touch of translucency. All pieces are microwave save, and all but the very fine can be washed in the dishwasher.
The artist, Karen Kotze, holds a BA degree in Fine Arts from the University of Stellenbosch. She has truly succeeded in bringing the individual flair of fine art into items for everyday use. Her main interest is to explore the utmost possibilities of the porcelain medium, but keeping the natural softness of the clay in mind and allowing inherent tensions within the clay to determine the final shape.
